Thanks to movies such as Munnabhai Lageraho , there has been a renewed interest in Mahatma Gandhi and his methods of action, philosophy and his  principles.

Gandhiji was the largest common denominator of  India of his times. He represented the interest of the broadest spectrum of Indians. He was one of the mainstream leaders to understand the importance of the emancipation of the Dalits, women and poor people in general

Gandhiji should be credited with maintaining the momentum through the period of the independence struggle. He was very liberal in outlook. He set  a model for secular , free, democratic India.

However the criticism against Gandhiji  includes the following :

    - He did not go all the way in support of the uplifting of the backward sections of the society.

 - His role as a family man raises questions. For example he would not let his daughter in law take medicine as he was against medicines. He insisted that she under go a "water treatment".

- He did not do enough to free  Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

- He did not appreciate the the need of industrialization the way Nehru did  to remove the widespread poverty.

Despite this it could be said that he had brazen the trail for a modern , secular , progressive, free, liberal India.
